In addition to stage work, Merna contributed to the animated television series Sofia the First, a Disney Junior production that aired from January 11, 2013, to September 8, 2018. The series, created by Craig Gerber for Disney Television Animation, centered on a young girl named Sofia who becomes a princess after her mother marries a king. Merna voiced the character of Prince James during seasons two and three of the show, following Zach Callison, who held the role in seasons one and two, and preceding Nicolas Cantu, who took over for seasons three and four.
Sofia the First earned nominations for eleven Daytime Emmy Awards and won three of them. The series also received the 2014 Annie Award for Best General Audience Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Preschool Children. At its peak, the show ranked as the most-watched program in the preschool cable television category.
