Tyler Hanes

Tyler Jonathan Hanes, born October 12, 1982, in Jacksonville, Florida, is an American actor, singer, dancer, and choreographer whose career has centered on Broadway musicals spanning from 1999 to 2019. The fifth of seven children, he was raised in Marietta, Georgia by his mother, Bonnie Hanes. He began dancing at age seven, inspired by his sisters, and went on to study at Pebblebrook High School, the Cobb County Center for the Performing Arts, and Carnegie Mellon School of Drama.

Hanes was discovered by choreographer and director Ann Reinking while participating in the Broadway Theater Project in Tampa, Florida. Reinking cast him in the first national tour of Fosse, the Tony Award-winning musical. He departed the tour to enroll at Carnegie Mellon University, leaving after one year to make his Broadway debut in the 2002 revival of Oklahoma. His Broadway career continued with appearances in the original companies of Urban Cowboy, The Boy From Oz, The Frogs, and Sweet Charity. He also played Larry in the original revival company of A Chorus Line, and appeared in the Broadway companies of Hairspray and On the Town. In a later production, he took on the role of Rum Tum Tugger in the Broadway revival of Cats.

Off-Broadway, Hanes starred in the musical Juno and in Stephen Sondheim's A Bed and a Chair: A NY Love Affair. On television, he recurred as Jerry Orbach in the FX series Fosse/Verdon. He is also a star and producer of the web series Ms. Guidance.

As a choreographer, Hanes has worked on Dancing with the Stars, Kristin Chenoweth's Some Lessons Learned World Tour, the Latin American premiere of El Chico De Oz in Lima, Peru, and Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls on Broadway. In his personal life, Hanes has been in a relationship with actor Van Hansis since 2007.
