About
Tyler Aaron Glenn, born November 28, 1983, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer best known as the lead vocalist and keyboardist of the rock band Neon Trees and as a solo artist. He made his Broadway debut in 2018, playing Charlie Price in Kinky Boots.
Glenn grew up in Temecula, California, where he attended Chaparral High School. He was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, following high school, served a Latter-day Saint mission in Nebraska. The origins of Neon Trees trace back to 2004 in Southern California, when Glenn's father suggested he play music with guitarist Chris Allen, whose father was a friend of Glenn's father. Glenn and Allen relocated to Provo, Utah in 2005 and formally established Neon Trees, with bassist Branden Campbell and drummer Elaine Doty — now Elaine Bradley — joining the lineup in 2007. The band built a following in the music scenes of Provo and Salt Lake City before receiving a significant break in 2007, when Ronnie Vannucci Jr., drummer for The Killers, caught the group performing at a small Las Vegas venue. Vannucci's enthusiasm led to The Killers inviting Neon Trees to open for them on their 2008 North American tour.
Neon Trees released their debut full-length album, Habits, in 2010. The album included "Animal," a song Glenn co-wrote that reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Their 2011 follow-up album, Picture Show, featured another Glenn co-write, "Everybody Talks," which became a top 10 hit in 2012. Beyond his work with Neon Trees, Glenn appeared as lead vocalist on "Born to Run," a track from Afrojack's 2014 debut studio album Forget the World. In 2015, he joined the holiday music collective Band of Merrymakers, contributing to their album Welcome to Our Christmas Party.
Glenn launched his solo career on April 28, 2016, with the electro pop single "Trash," whose music video premiered in Rolling Stone the following day. His debut solo album, Excommunication, followed on October 21, 2016. The record addresses his experiences with the LDS Church and his response to their policies, including the November 2015 announcement that children of same-sex married couples could not be baptized until the age of 18. Glenn has stated that the lyric "I tried to kill myself and I'm not the only one," from the album track "G.D.M.M.L. GRLS," reflects how those anti-gay policies affected him and other queer people. Glenn no longer self-identifies as Mormon and has resigned his church membership.
In the April 10, 2014 issue of Rolling Stone, Glenn publicly revealed that he is gay, discussing how he had kept his sexuality private throughout his life. He stated that he had been aware of his attraction to men since childhood. On April 11, 2018, Glenn announced via Twitter that he would make his Broadway debut as Charlie Price in Kinky Boots, beginning May 6, 2018, for a limited run through July 15, 2018.
