Trevor Laird is a British actor born on 11 July 1957 in Islington, London, England. He trained at the Anna Scher Theatre and began his screen career in the mid-1970s, appearing in a 1976 television adaptation of Peter Prince's novel Playthings, directed by Stephen Frears. He subsequently appeared in several Play for Today productions, including Tom Clarke's Victims of Apartheid in 1978, Barrie Keeffe's Waterloo Sunset in 1979, and Robert Holles's The Vanishing Army in 1980.
In 1978, Laird was a founding member of the Black Theatre Co-operative, the organization now known as NitroBeat, and the following year performed in its inaugural production, Welcome Home Jacko by Mustapha Matura. That same period brought him two significant film roles: Ferdy, a drug supplier for the central character Jimmy, in the 1979 film Quadrophenia, and Beefy in Franco Rosso's 1980 cult film Babylon. He also appeared in The Long Good Friday in 1980, playing the boy under the car, and in Menelik Shabazz's Burning an Illusion.
Laird's later career continued across film and television. In 1986 he appeared in the Doctor Who serial Mindwarp as the guard commander Frax, and he later returned to the series in the recurring role of Clive Jones, father of Martha Jones, companion to the Tenth Doctor. In 1996 he played Hortense's brother in Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies. Additional credits include Wesley Carter in the television series Undercover Heart and Trevor in the 2000 British gangster film Love, Honour and Obey. He played Detective Inspector Mike Vedder in the Waking the Dead episode End of the Night, Series 8, Episode 4, broadcast in 2009.
In 2012, Laird made his Broadway debut in One Man, Two Guvnors. In 2015 he appeared as Vince Thuram in the BBC series Death in Paradise, and in March 2021 he played Samuel Asante in an episode of the BBC soap opera Doctors.
