Born September 17, 1929, in New York City, Tresa Hughes studied at the Maryland Art Institute, Johns Hopkins University, and George Washington University before graduating from Wayne State University. She served as a company member at Pennsylvania's Hedgerow Theatre and the Playwrights Theater Company in Chicago. She married documentary filmmaker Robert Hughes; their daughter is Rebecca Hughes.
