About
Toralv Maurstad (24 November 1926 – 4 November 2022) was a Norwegian actor who worked across stage, film, and television, and who appeared on Broadway in 1967 in Of Love Remembered. Born into a theatrical family, he was the son of actors Alfred Maurstad and Tordis Maurstad (née Witzøe), and the half-brother of actress Mari Maurstad. His connection to the profession began in childhood: he made his screen debut at age ten in the 1937 film Fant, in which his father Alfred starred.
Maurstad trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1949. His career developed to encompass not only leading acting roles but also stage direction and institutional leadership. He served as head of Oslo Nye Teater from 1967 to 1978, then led Norway's Nationaltheatret from 1978 to 1986. He became particularly associated with the role of Peer Gynt in Henrik Ibsen's play, performing it on numerous occasions over the course of his career, including excerpts presented at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
His Broadway work included the 1967 production of Of Love Remembered, and he later co-starred with Liv Ullmann in a New York City staging of Ibsen's A Doll's House, a production that received critical acclaim. His sole American film appearance came in the 1970 musical Song of Norway, a biographical film about composer Edvard Grieg that also featured Florence Henderson and was based on the 1944 Broadway musical of the same name; the film was both a commercial and critical disappointment.
The King of Norway recognized Maurstad's contributions by appointing him a Knight, First Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav in 1974, and in March 2007 he was further appointed a Commander of the same order. In his personal life, Maurstad was married three times. His first wife was Swedish actress Eva Henning, with whom he had two sons, Peder Maurstad and Momse Maurstad, the latter of whom died at six months of age. His second wife was Anne-Ma Burum. On New Year's Eve 1999, he married his third wife, actress Beate Eriksen; he was 73 and she was 39 at the time of their marriage. In 2001, an application by Eriksen to adopt a child was rejected under Norwegian rules requiring prospective adoptive parents to be between the ages of 25 and 45, as Maurstad was then 74. He died on 4 November 2022, at the age of 95.
