About

Anthony "Tony" Torn, born in 1965, is an American actor, director, and producer, and the son of actors Rip Torn and Geraldine Page. His work spans film, television, and theatre, with a particular concentration in New York's experimental performance community.

Torn made his Broadway appearance in 2013, playing Rusty Trawler in Breakfast at Tiffany's at the Cort Theatre. Beyond Broadway, his theatrical work has taken him to the Signature Theatre, Classic Stage Company, American Repertory Theater, and La MaMa, among other venues. At Classic Stage Company he played Trinculo in a 2008 production of The Tempest, and he returned to the role of Stephano in a 2014 La MaMa staging of the same play. Additional credits include The Picture at chashama in 2000, Venus at the Signature Theatre in 2017, and King Lear at La MaMa in 2024, in which he played both Lear and Oswald.

A significant portion of Torn's career has been devoted to avant-garde and experimental theatre. He collaborated extensively with directors Reza Abdoh and Richard Foreman, appearing in Abdoh's productions Father Was A Peculiar Man (1990), The Law of Remains (1991), The Blind Owl (1992), Tight Right White (1993), and Quotations From a Ruined City (1994). His work with Foreman included The Universe (1996), Paradise Hotel (1999), and Now That Communism Is Dead My Life Feels Empty! (2004). Torn also worked alongside lead performer William Talen in developing the character of Reverend Billy, and served as one of the founding directors of the New York City performance community Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping.

In 2014, Torn co-directed and starred as Pa Ubu in Ubu Sings Ubu at Abrons Art Center, an immersive adaptation of Ubu Roi incorporating music by avant-garage rock band Pere Ubu. In 2019, he portrayed a fictionalized version of performance artist Paul Swan in Paul Swan Is Dead and Gone, produced with avant-garde theatre company The Civilians. In 2024, he appeared in the original cast of Life and Trust, an Off-Broadway site-specific immersive production created by the producers of Sleep No More, playing J. G. Conwell, a Roaring Twenties analogue to Faust. That same year, Torn directed the United States premiere of The Whole of Time, a feminist reworking of The Glass Menagerie by Argentinian playwright Romina Paula, staged at The Brick Theater in 2025. The production received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Adaptation and was extended multiple times.

Torn's television credits include recurring appearances on Law & Order between 1997 and 2009, as well as roles on 30 Rock (2009), The Good Wife (2010), The Blacklist (2018), Teenage Bounty Hunters (2020), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2021). He also appeared in the 2015 film Jason and Shirley.
