About
Tony Sheldon is an Australian actor, singer, and writer born on 12 September 1955 in Brisbane, Australia. He comes from a prominent theatrical family: his mother is performer Toni Lamond, his father is Frank Sheldon, his aunt is Helen Reddy, and his grandmother is Stella Lamond.
Sheldon's career in Australian theatre spans decades. Among his early credits, he starred as the Baker in the Australian premiere of Into the Woods in 1993 and portrayed Mendel in the Australian premiere of Falsettos in 1994. His 1984 performance in Torch Song Trilogy earned him both a Greenroom Award for Best Actor in a Play and a Variety Club Heart Award for Actor of the Year. In 2003, his work in The Witches of Eastwick brought nominations for both a Helpmann Award and a Green Room Award. His portrayal of Roger de Bris in The Producers in 2005 resulted in wins at the Helpmann Awards, the Mo Awards, the Sydney Critics Awards, and the Glugs Awards. In 2006, he wrote and directed The Times of My Life, created for his mother Toni Lamond, which was staged at the Ensemble Theatre and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
The role of Bernadette in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert became the defining credit of Sheldon's career. He originated the character in the Australian stage production and went on to accumulate more than 1,700 performances in the role across productions in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, the West End in 2009, and Toronto before the Broadway premiere in March 2011. His performance in the West End earned him a nomination for the Olivier Award for Leading Performance in a Musical in 2010, as well as a What's on Stage Award nomination in the same category. In Australia, his work in the production won him the Sydney Theatre Critics Award for Best Actor in a Musical, the Greenroom Award for Best Actor in a Musical, the Mo Award for Musical Theatre Performer of the Year, and the Aussietheatre.com Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
Sheldon's Broadway debut in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 2011 brought him widespread recognition. He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, along with nominations from the Drama League, the Drama Desk, and the Outer Critics Circle, all in the leading actor category. He won the Theatre World Award that same year. A decade after the original Australian production, Sheldon performed his 1,800th performance as Bernadette in Melbourne on 7 March 2018 as part of an anniversary tour presented by Michael Cassel Group, and reached 1,900 performances in the role on 20 June of that year at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney.
Between his two Broadway engagements, Sheldon took on additional stage work in the United States. In 2013, he played Horace in Hello, Dolly! at the Goodspeed Opera House. The following year, he portrayed both Merlyn and Pellinore in a concert staging of Camelot at the Kennedy Center. His second Broadway credit came in 2017, when he played Dufayel in Amélie, A New Musical. Following his Broadway work, he joined the Australian production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as Grandpa Joe, a role he held from 2019 through February 2020.
Sheldon's cast recording credits include the original Australian cast recording of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert from 2007 and the original Broadway cast recording from 2011, among several other Australian cast albums spanning from 1979 onward. He and his long-term partner, actor and playwright Tony Taylor, had been together for 45 years as of 2025.
