About
Born Aryeh (Arthur) Leonard Rosenberg on February 26, 1920, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tony Randall was the son of Julia and Mogscha Rosenberg. After one year at Northwestern University, he trained under Sanford Meisner and Martha Graham at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. Early in his career, he worked as an announcer at radio station WTAG in Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1991, he founded the National Actors Theatre. He was married first to Florence Gibbs and later to Heather Harlan, with whom he had two children, Julia and Jefferson.
His film credits include "Pillow Talk," "Lover Come Back," "Send Me No Flowers," "Let's Make Love," "Robin and the 7 Hoods," "The King of Comedy," "Scavenger Hunt," "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," "Fatal Instinct," and "Down with Love." On television, he appeared on "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," "Happy Days," "Saturday Night Live," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," "The Magic School Bus," and "The Daily Show."
He won the 1975 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for "The Odd Couple."
His autobiography, Which Reminds Me, was published in 1989. Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor on May 18, 2004.
