About
Anthony Patrick Caunter, born on 22 September 1937 in Southampton, England, was an English actor whose career spanned stage, television, and film across more than four decades. The second son of Annie Mary and Roy Hobert Caunter, he grew up with an older brother, Roger, and attended Worthing and Westcliff High Schools. He died on 13 October 2025 at Eastbourne General Hospital in East Sussex at the age of 88, one week after the death of his wife, Frances Wallace, whom he had married in 1962. The couple had four children together.
Caunter began his acting career in the 1960s, and among his earliest professional engagements was a Broadway appearance in 1963 in Chips With Everything. His television work commenced during the same decade and grew to encompass an extensive range of British productions, including Z-Cars, The Avengers, The Saint, Dixon of Dock Green, Catweazle, The Champions, Special Branch, Crown Court, and The Scarlet Pimpernel, among many others. He also appeared in The Sweeney, Minder, The Professionals, Pennies From Heaven, London's Burning, Casualty, Lovejoy, Heartbeat, Boon, May to December, Howards' Way, Westbeach, Home to Roost, and The Main Chance.
Several roles brought Caunter particular recognition. Between 1970 and 1972 he played Jack Shepherd in the Yorkshire Television sitcom Queenie's Castle, and from 1980 to 1982 he portrayed DCI Jim Logan across the first three series of Juliet Bravo. In The Chief he appeared as Deputy Chief Constable Arthur Quine, and in the television film S.O.S. Titanic he played the ship's chief officer Henry Wilde. His longest-running single role came with the BBC soap opera EastEnders, in which he portrayed car dealer Roy Evans from 1994 until the character's death in 2003.
Caunter also made multiple appearances in the long-running science fiction series Doctor Who, featuring in The Crusade in 1965, Colony in Space in 1971, and Enlightenment in 1983. He additionally appeared in the Blake's 7 episode Deliverance in 1978.
