About

Toni Darnay, born Mercy Mustell on April 11, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, was an American actress and dancer whose stage career on Broadway spanned from 1944 to 1977. Her father, Robert R. Mustell, was a physician, while her mother had performed in silent films and on stage in theaters owned by Darnay's grandfather, Landon Gates. Darnay attended College Prep High School in Chicago and trained in acting, dancing, and singing at the Chicago Art Theatre. As a young performer she danced at venues including The Palmer House and Chez Paree and gained experience in vaudeville, repertory theater, and summer stock, though her father frequently curtailed those pursuits. After spending a year taking night classes at Northwestern University while also dancing at a nightclub, she traveled to New York in search of Broadway work at age nineteen.

Before establishing herself in New York, Darnay worked in Chicago in 1940 as a member of Winnie Hoveler's Dancing Darlings, performing in the floor show at Harry's New Yorker. She subsequently acted with stock theater companies in Oconomowac Walk, Wisconsin, and Bridgehampton, Long Island, among other locations. Her touring credits included playing the ingenue lead in a company of Arsenic and Old Lace, as well as appearances in Black Narcissus, The Duenna, and Name Your Own Poison.

Darnay's Broadway debut came in 1944 when she danced in Sadie Thompson. Her subsequent Broadway work included serving as an understudy in The Women in 1973, and taking on both performing and understudy roles in Molly and The Heiress. She also appeared in Tennessee Williams's Vieux Carré in 1977. Her performance in The Heiress earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play in 1976. Additional stage productions in which she appeared included Life with Father.

While out of town for her Broadway debut in Sadie Thompson, Darnay auditioned for and won the title role in the CBS radio serial The Strange Romance of Evelyn Winters, which ran from November 20, 1944, to November 12, 1948. Her radio work extended across multiple soap operas: she starred as Nona Dutell on Nona from Nowhere, played Sylvia Field on When a Girl Marries, appeared as Libby Allen on Stella Dallas, and portrayed Nancy on Just Plain Bill. She was also heard regularly on Aunt Jenny's Real Life Stories.

Darnay's television career included a role in Eleanor and Franklin, appearances in nine Hallmark Hall of Fame productions, and recurring roles in the soap operas The Doctors, The Edge of Night, and Search for Tomorrow. Her film credits included The Exorcist, Pendulum, and The Swimmer.

In her personal life, Darnay married writer Elwood (Bill) Hoffman in March 1947; the marriage lasted until his death in January 1962, and the couple had two children, including defense attorney Darnay Hoffman. She married theatrical columnist Hobe Morrison in 1964, and they remained married until her death. Darnay died of lung cancer at her Manhattan home on January 5, 1983, at the age of sixty-one.
