Tom Kneebone

Tom Kneebone (12 May 1932 – 15 November 2003) was a New Zealand-Canadian actor and cabaret performer whose career spanned Broadway, Canadian festivals, and community theatre. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, he trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England before establishing himself as a stage performer on both sides of the Atlantic.

Kneebone appeared on Broadway between 1956 and 1968, accumulating credits that included Noël Coward's Sweet Potato, Troilus and Cressida, Macbeth, Romeo + Juliet, and King Richard II. In 1963 he relocated to Canada, settling in Toronto, Ontario, where he built a sustained presence in the country's theatrical community. He performed in numerous revues across Canada, frequently sharing the stage with Dinah Christie as his regular onstage partner. His festival work included appearances at both the Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival of Canada.

In 1987, Kneebone became artistic director of the Smile Theatre Company, through which he wrote and directed performances staged at health care facilities and senior citizens' homes. That work brought him national recognition: in early 2003 he was appointed to both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario. His Order of Canada citation acknowledged him as a multi-talented performer with a long and eclectic career, while his Order of Ontario honour recognized his role in bringing live theatre to thousands of seniors in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

Kneebone died on 15 November 2003 in Toronto at the age of 71.
