About

Tom Helmore (4 January 1904 – 12 September 1995) was an English actor born in London who built a career spanning stage, film, and television across more than four decades. He died in Longboat Key, Florida.

Before committing fully to acting, Helmore worked in his father's accounting firm while taking on uncredited extra work in films. He eventually pursued performance as a profession, establishing himself primarily on the stage before transitioning to Broadway and later to Hollywood. His Broadway career ran from 1945 to 1965 and included starring roles in Tipping the Winner and Legend of Sarah, as well as appearances in The Playroom, the comedy Debut, One Eye Closed, and other productions.

Helmore's film work began in Britain in 1927 with an uncredited appearance in The Ring, and over the following decades he accumulated credits in more than fifty films through 1972. His early British work included roles in White Cargo, The Barton Mystery, The Feathered Serpent, and Secret Agent, among others. In both British and American productions he was frequently cast in dapper, comedic parts.

His Hollywood career brought him into contact with Alfred Hitchcock on three occasions. He appeared in two episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents in 1958 and that same year played Gavin Elster, the villain, in Hitchcock's Vertigo — the role for which he remains most widely recognized. Additional American film credits include Three Daring Daughters, Malaya, Trouble Along the Way, Designing Woman, The Time Machine, and Advise and Consent, in which he played the British Ambassador. He also portrayed Lamont Cranston in a 1954 television pilot of The Shadow.
