Tom Alan Robbins is an American actor born on March 29, 1954, in Canton, Ohio. He attended Lehman High School before pursuing formal training at the Juilliard School, where he earned a bachelor's degree as a member of Group Six.
Robbins has appeared in eight Broadway productions spanning 1987 to 2022. Among his most notable credits is The Lion King, in which he originated the role of Pumbaa. His Broadway work also includes starring roles in the musical Head Over Heels and the play Is He Dead?, as well as appearances in A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical, Newsies The Musical, and additional productions.
Beyond Broadway, Robbins built an extensive stage career in both tours and Off-Broadway productions. He portrayed Thenardier in the first national tour of Les Misérables. His Off-Broadway credits include the 2019 revival of Little Shop of Horrors, Brooklynite, the New York premiere of On the Verge, the world premiere of Isn't It Romantic, The Cradle Will Rock, the world premiere of The Rise and Rise of Daniel Rocket, Henry V at the Public Theatre, King Lear, and the Van Buren's New York premiere of On The Air, A Nostalgiaspoof Review of the Golden Age of Radio. In regional theater, he took on the world premiere of The Whale as Charlie, and appeared in productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream as Bottom, Fiddler on the Roof as Tevye, The Producers as Franz, Man of La Mancha as Sancho, My Name Is Asher Lev, and The Taming of the Shrew as Tranio.
Robbins has also worked in television, appearing in episodes of The Good Wife, Seinfeld, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order, as well as serving as a series regular on Baby Talk, where he played Dr. Elliot Fleisher.
In addition to performing, Robbins works as a playwright. His first play, The Joke the Rabbit Told Me, won the NAAA Playreading competition in London and received a reading at the Tristan Bates Theatre in the West End. His subsequent play, Muse, won the 2019 New Works of Merit Playwriting Contest and was given a reading at the Playroom Theatre in New York.
