About

Toby Claude, born Harriette Mary Kavanagh on January 29, 1877, in Dublin, Ireland, was an actress and singer whose career spanned vaudeville, Broadway, and silent film. Her father, Richard Kavanaugh, was Irish, and her mother, Angelina Claude, was an English burlesque actress. She adopted the nickname "Toby" during childhood, taking it from a dog depicted on the cover of Punch magazine. She died on October 27, 1962, in Los Angeles, California.

Claude's Broadway career ran from 1900 to 1904 and encompassed a range of musical productions. Her stage credits during this period included The Belle of New York and The Cadet Girl, both in 1900, followed by The Prima Donna in 1901 and Floradora in 1902. That same year she appeared in The Belle of Broadway, and her Broadway work continued with The Supper Club, The Talk of New York, and The Baroness Fiddlesticks in 1904. Theatre writers of the era frequently remarked on her notably small stature, with one 1904 commentator describing her as "almost sufficiently diminutive to rank as an eccentric Lilliputian." Her stage work extended beyond Broadway to include Fantana in 1906, and her vaudeville act featured performances of popular songs. In 1910 she undertook touring engagements in Hawaii and Australia.

During World War I, Claude participated in military recruitment drives. In middle age she transitioned to silent film, appearing in five productions: Lost: A Wife in 1925, The Clinging Vine and For Alimony Only in 1926, and No Control and Turkish Delight in 1927. The 1925 film is now considered lost. In 1929 she was among a group of actors who founded the Actors Theater in Los Angeles.

In her personal life, Claude married fellow actor William P. Carleton; the couple divorced in 1903. In 1915 she became the subject of public scandal when she was discovered leaving the United States in the company of another actress's husband and young child.
