About

Timothy Gray, born John Baker Gray on September 5, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, was an American songwriter, author, singer, and director whose career spanned vaudeville, Broadway, television, and the London stage. He died on March 17, 2007, in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 80.

Gray began performing in vaudeville at the age of 16 before transitioning to Broadway, where his acting credits included As the Girls Go and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. He subsequently worked in television before shifting his focus to writing and composing.

As a writer, Gray is best known for his collaboration with Hugh Martin on High Spirits, a musical adaptation of Noël Coward's play Blithe Spirit. The partnership also produced the score for the London show Love From Judy. Among the songs Gray composed were "Forever and a Day," "Go and Get Your Old Banjo," "Was She Prettier Than I?," "Home Sweet Heaven," "You'd Better Love Me," and "If I Gave You."

High Spirits, which opened on Broadway in 1964, earned Gray two Tony Award nominations: one for Best Author (Musical) and one for Best Composer and Lyricist. The production also received a nomination for Best Musical.

Beyond his work on High Spirits, Gray contributed to Broadway in additional capacities. He served as vocal arranger for the 1971 production of Good News and produced the 1974 revival of Johnny Johnson.
