Timothy Carhart is an American actor born Timothy Grunig on December 24, 1953, in Washington, D.C. He attended junior high and high school in Evanston, Illinois, and traveled to İzmir and Ankara in Turkey and to Verdun in France before returning to the United States to study theater.

Carhart made his television debut in NBC's 1978 miniseries The Awakening Land. During the 1980s he accumulated guest appearances on series including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Miami Vice, Crime Story, and two episodes of Spenser: For Hire. He played Richard in the Tales from the Darkside episode "Ursu Minor" in 1985. In 1989, Carhart held a recurring role on Thirtysomething and was a series regular on the CBS medical drama Island Son, which ran through 1990. His television work in the 1990s spanned a wide range of genres, including appearances on Quantum Leap and a 1991 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation titled "Redemption (Part 2)." Carhart's film career began with the 1984 blockbuster Ghostbusters. In 1985 he had a supporting role in the Academy Award-winning drama Witness, playing an undercover narcotics officer whose murder drives the story's plot, and also appeared in Desperately Seeking Susan and the drama Marie. Three films followed in 1986: Sweet Liberty, The Manhattan Project, and Playing for Keeps. He took the second male lead in The Rescue (1988) and appeared in Working Girl that same year.
