About
Timothy Busfield is an American actor and director born on June 12, 1957, in Lansing, Michigan, to Roger Busfield, a drama professor, and Jean Busfield, director of the Michigan State University Press. He graduated from East Lansing High School in 1975 and subsequently studied at East Tennessee State University for two years.
Busfield began his professional stage career in 1982 as an understudy to Matthew Broderick in Brighton Beach Memoirs, also working with Circle Repertory Company that year. He then relocated to Los Angeles in 1983 to join the cast of the ABC sitcom Reggie, an American adaptation of the BBC series The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. The following year, he took on the role of Arnold Poindexter in the comedy film Revenge of the Nerds, a character he reprised in the 1987 sequel. Concurrently, he joined the CBS medical drama Trapper John, M.D. as J.T. McIntyre, remaining with the series through its conclusion in 1986.
In 1987, Busfield was cast as Elliot Weston on the ABC drama thirtysomething, a role that earned him three Emmy nominations and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1991. During the same period, he appeared as the antagonist Mark in the 1989 film Field of Dreams. In 1990, he replaced Tom Hulce as the lead in the Broadway production of A Few Good Men, the same year he made his directorial debut by helming three episodes of thirtysomething.
Along with his brother Buck, Busfield co-founded the Fantasy Theatre, a professional touring company for children's audiences that was later designated California's Honorary State Children's Theater. The brothers established the B Street Theatre in Sacramento, California, in 1992, focusing on adult stage productions. Busfield has also written children's plays for the Fantasy troupe.
His film work in the 1990s included supporting roles in Sneakers (1992), Quiz Show (1994), and Little Big League (1994), in which he portrayed Minnesota Twins first baseman Lou Collins, a character loosely based on Kent Hrbek. On television, he starred as the head of the Byrd family in The Byrds of Paradise on ABC from 1993 to 1994, and appeared in the ABC comedy-drama Champs in 1996. He began a recurring role as Danny Concannon on The West Wing, appearing intermittently throughout the series. He directed and executive produced the CBS drama Without a Trace from 2002 to 2009, occasionally appearing onscreen as Jack Malone's lawyer, and co-starred as control director Cal Shanley on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, on which he also directed episodes. He served as co-executive producer on Ed, where he also guest-starred as Ed's brother Lloyd, and as executive producer of Lipstick Jungle from 2008 to 2009. He directed episodes of Sports Night, Las Vegas, and Damages, and guest starred on Sleepy Hollow as Benjamin Franklin from 2014 to 2015.
In 2019, Busfield directed the film Guest Artist, which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, launching Grand River Productions alongside Jeff Daniels and Busfield's wife, Melissa Gilbert. That same year, he guest starred in Dolly Parton's Heartstrings as Logan Cantrell. In 2020, he voiced the title character in the Marvel/SiriusXM radio drama podcast series Marvel's Wastelanders: Star-Lord.
Outside of entertainment, Busfield signed as a pitcher with the semi-pro Sacramento Smokeys in the summer of 1992, pitching for the team through the 2000 season and accumulating a record of 30 wins and 12 losses over nine seasons. In 2024, he was inducted into the Sacramento Baseball Hall of Fame as a pitcher.
Busfield has faced multiple legal matters. In 1994, a 17-year-old female extra accused him of sexual assault during the 1993 filming of Little Big League; Busfield denied the allegations and filed a defamation countersuit against the accuser's lawyers, but ultimately settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount. In 1996, a judge ordered him to pay $150,000 to the Minneapolis law firm that had represented the accuser following the loss of his defamation suit. In 2012, a 28-year-old woman accused him of groping her at a Los Angeles-area movie theater; the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office declined to file charges, citing insufficient evidence, and Busfield stated the contact was consensual. In January 2026, an arrest warrant was issued in New Mexico after twin boys and their parent alleged that Busfield had sexually assaulted the children on the set of the television series The Cleaning Lady between November 2022 and early 2024. Busfield faced charges including two counts of sexual abuse involving a minor and one count of child abuse. He turned himself in to Albuquerque authorities on January 13, 2026, after the U.S. Marshals Service joined the effort to locate him three days after the warrant was issued. On February 6, 2026, he was charged with four counts of criminal sexual contact of a child. Busfield denied the allegations, and his lawyers stated that an independent investigation by Warner Brothers found the allegations unfounded and that he passed a polygraph test. Following the charges, he was dropped by talent agency Innovative Artists, and NBC chose not to broadcast a Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode in which he had appeared, while Amazon MGM Studios edited his scenes from You Deserve Each Other.
