About

Timothy David Minchin AM was born on 7 October 1975 in Northampton, England, to Australian parents Ros and David Ellison Minchin. He holds both Australian and British citizenship, a status that applied automatically to everyone born in the United Kingdom before 1983. His father and paternal grandfather were surgeons in Perth, and his maternal grandfather, Vic Fisher, played Australian rules football for West Perth in the WANFL and for Essendon in the VFL. Minchin is also descended from R. E. Minchin, the founding director of Adelaide Zoo. He returned to Australia with his family and grew up in Perth alongside an elder brother, Dan, and two younger sisters, Katie and Nel.

Minchin began piano lessons at the age of eight, abandoning them after three years before rekindling his interest in the instrument through collaborative songwriting with his brother Dan, a guitarist. He attended Christ Church Grammar School, an independent school in Perth, and went on to earn a BA in English and theatre from the University of Western Australia in 1996. He followed that with an Advanced Diploma in contemporary music from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 1998.

After graduating from WAAPA, Minchin began composing music for documentaries and theatre. In 2000 he wrote and starred in the musical Pop at the Blue Room Theatre in Perth, and in 2001 released a CD titled Sit with his band Timmy the Dog. He relocated from Perth to Melbourne in 2002 to pursue acting work, spending an initial period without an agent and without acting engagements. He eventually consolidated his comedic songs into a single live show, a decision that redirected his career toward comedy performance.

His breakthrough came with the show Darkside, co-produced by Laughing Stock Productions, which won the inaugural Festival Directors' Award at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and earned him the Perrier Comedy Award for Best Newcomer at the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His 2006 show So Rock was nominated for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's Barry Award, and in 2007 he received the Best Alternative Comedian award at the HBO US Comedy Arts Festival. Live recordings of Darkside and So Rock were released as CDs, and a DVD titled So Live, recorded at the Sydney Opera House Studio, was released in Australia in 2007. A UK edition of largely the same material, titled So F**king Rock Live, followed in 2008.

Minchin describes his stage act as a "funny cabaret show" and considers himself primarily a musician and songwriter. His performances typically feature him barefoot, wearing heavy eye makeup and a suit with tails, seated at a grand piano. He has explained that the eye makeup amplifies his facial expressions for audiences while his hands are occupied at the keyboard, and that going barefoot increases his comfort onstage. His shows combine comedic songs and poetry on subjects including social satire and religion, interspersed with stand-up routines. In October 2010 he was named a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association.

A documentary film about Minchin, Rock n Roll Nerd, directed by Rhian Skirving, received a theatrical release in 2008 and was broadcast on ABC1 in 2009. In 2013 he played rock star Atticus Fetch in the television series Californication. He later co-wrote and starred as Lucky Flynn in the TV series Upright, which ran from 2019 to 2022.

On Broadway, Minchin is the composer and lyricist of Matilda the Musical and Groundhog Day the Musical. Matilda the Musical is an Olivier Award winner, a Tony Award winner, and a Grammy Award nominee, and it earned Minchin the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics in 2013. Groundhog Day the Musical is also an Olivier Award winner and received a Tony Award nomination.

The University of Western Australia awarded Minchin an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 2013 for his contribution to the arts. Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts conferred a second honorary Doctor of Letters upon him in 2015, and Edith Cowan University awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Performing Arts in 2019. In the 2020 Australia Day Honours he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the performing arts and to the community.
