Thompson Buchanan (June 21, 1877 – October 15, 1937) was an American playwright, composer, and book writer born in New York, New York. His career spanned journalism, fiction, theater, film, and radio, making him a versatile figure in American entertainment during the early twentieth century.
Buchanan began his writing career as a journalist before turning to novels, publishing The Castle Comedy in 1904 and Judith Triumphant in 1905. He subsequently shifted his focus to the stage, with early dramatic works including The Intruder in 1908. His 1909 play A Woman's Way, which starred Grace George, marked his first significant theatrical success. The Cub followed in 1910, and The Rack appeared in 1911. Later stage works included Life in 1914, Civilian Clothes in 1919, and The Sporting Thing To Do in 1922. His Broadway credits also encompass As Good as New, The Bridal Path, and Bluffing Bluffers, among additional productions.
In 1916, Buchanan expanded into motion pictures, adding screenwriting to his professional output. He also wrote radio sketches, further broadening his work across emerging entertainment media.
In his personal life, Buchanan was married twice. His first marriage was to Katharine Winterbotham, which lasted from 1915 to 1927. He subsequently married actress Joan Lowell in 1927; that marriage ended in 1929.
Buchanan died on October 15, 1937, in Louisville, Kentucky, where he had traveled to visit family. His death resulted from a heart attack suffered during that trip.
