About
Thomas W. Ross (January 22, 1875 – November 14, 1959) was an American stage and film actor born in Boston, Massachusetts, who died in Torrington, Connecticut. His Broadway career spanned from 1902 to 1943, encompassing comedy, drama, and revue productions across more than four decades.
Ross first attracted significant critical attention through his portrayal of the title character in Henry Blossom's 1903 play Checkers. The production premiered at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. on September 21, 1903, and Ross carried the role through two separate Broadway runs, in 1903 and 1904, as well as a national tour. His Broadway work during the following decades included Lawrence Grattan's The Gossipy Sex in 1927, in which he played John Bowen, and appearances in the 1928 and 1929 editions of George White's Scandals as part of the Elm City Four. He also appeared in the 1922 edition of George White's Scandals. In 1933 he took the role of Joe Heller in Harry Delf's The Family Upstairs.
Among his later stage credits, Ross played Judge Skimmerhorn in Maxwell Anderson's High Tor in 1937. The following year he appeared as Mr. Webb in the original Broadway production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 1943 he played Mr. Bridges in Nunnally Johnson's comedy The World's Full of Girls.
Ross made his film debut in the 1913 silent adaptation of Checkers, reprising the stage role he had originated a decade earlier. He returned to film intermittently over the following years, appearing in The Only Son in 1914 and the now-lost The Fatal Hour in 1920, as well as Fine Feathers and Without Limit in 1921 and Smoking Trails in 1924. His most concentrated period of film work came between 1939 and 1942, during which he appeared in approximately two dozen pictures, among them Remember the Night, The Mortal Storm, Meet John Doe, The Little Foxes, Kings Row, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and The Remarkable Andrew. During this later phase of his film career he frequently went uncredited. His final film appearance came in 1942, and his overall filmography totaled roughly two dozen productions.
