Thomas Mitchell was an American actor, writer, and theatre director born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He built a reputation as both a leading man on Broadway and one of the prominent character actors of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Mitchell's Broadway career spanned more than four decades, from 1916 to 1960. During that time he took on roles across a range of productions, appearing in plays including Cloudy with Showers, Glory Hallelujah, and Little Accident. He also starred in the play Cut of the Axe and the drama An Inspector Calls.

In addition to his work as a performer, Mitchell contributed to Broadway as a book writer. His musical theatre credits included a starring role in Hazel Flagg, for which he received the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1953.
