About
Thomas Steven Middleditch is a Canadian actor born on March 10, 1982, in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, whose parents are British. He first encountered performance in eighth grade when being cast in a play prompted a decisive shift in his interests. His early training in improvisation began in grade school through Theatresports, and his first professional work consisted of acting in Canadian Heritage Plays in his hometown.
Middleditch studied theatre at the University of Victoria before relocating to Toronto, where he was accepted into George Brown Theatre School but chose not to enroll. He instead moved to Chicago, taking classes at The Second City and iO Theater while performing regularly at both institutions. In 2005 he became a founding member of the Improvised Shakespeare Company. Immigration complications led him to take cash jobs until Charna Halpern sponsored his work visa. A Second City cruise engagement produced an audition for Saturday Night Live; though he was not cast, the material he performed secured him a network holding deal and prompted his move to New York City.
His screen career began with commercials and small film roles. A sketch video he made with Fernando Sosa in Chicago in 2007 was purchased by McDonald's and broadcast as a commercial. He portrayed the lead character Justin Frost in the 2009 romantic comedy Splinterheads and subsequently appeared in films including Fun Size, The Campaign alongside Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, Someone Marry Barry, The Brass Teapot, and The Kings of Summer. He made a cameo in The Wolf of Wall Street as a broker fired for cleaning his fish bowl, and had a role in the final season of The Office. In 2015 he appeared in both The Final Girls and The Bronze.
Middleditch joined the cast of HBO's Silicon Valley in January 2013, playing Richard Hendricks, a role he has said was written with him in mind. The series ran from 2014 to 2019 and brought him significant recognition, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2016 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, four Satellite Award nominations with a win in 2019, and two Critics' Choice Television Award nominations. Beginning in October 2020, he played Drew Dunbar in the CBS series B Positive.
His voice work includes the title character in the Disney XD animated series Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero, which ran from 2014 to 2017; Harold Hutchins in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie in 2017; Sam Coleman in Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019; and Terry Opposites in the Hulu adult animated series Solar Opposites. He also appeared in Verizon Wireless advertising campaigns beginning in 2017. In April 2020, he and Ben Schwartz starred together in the Netflix improv special Middleditch and Schwartz.
Middleditch made his Broadway debut in 2024, playing Eli in Eureka Day. In June 2025, he was announced as Chief Creative Officer of a revived Commodore.
In his personal life, Middleditch became engaged to costume designer Mollie Gates in June 2015 and married her on August 22, 2015. Gates filed for divorce in May 2020, and the divorce was finalized in April 2021. During a January 2022 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Middleditch stated that he had become a United States citizen. In March 2021, the Los Angeles Times published allegations that Middleditch sexually harassed women at a goth club called Cloak & Dagger, including groping a woman, who disclosed messages from Middleditch in which he apologized.
