About
Thomas Jay Ryan is an American actor born on August 1, 1962, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is perhaps most widely recognized for his starring role in Hal Hartley's 1997 film Henry Fool, a performance he reprised in two sequels: Fay Grim in 2007 and Ned Rifle in 2014. Ryan trained at Carnegie Mellon University and built his stage foundation at prominent regional institutions including the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and the Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven. His theatrical range has extended from classical roles such as Dracula to portrayals of historical figures such as the French painter Edgar Degas, and he has collaborated with avant-garde playwright Richard Foreman.
Ryan's screen work beyond the Henry Fool trilogy includes supporting appearances in Teknolust, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Book of Life, and Dream Boy. On stage, he played pioneering gay activist Harry Hay in the initial production of The Temperamentals in New York in 2009, the same year his Broadway career began. His Broadway credits span from 2009 to 2024 and include An Enemy of the People, West Side Story, The Nap, In the Next Room, and The Crucible. The Crucible engagement, in 2016, placed him in the role of Thomas Putnam in Ivo van Hove's production of Arthur Miller's play at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Away from Broadway, Ryan appeared in the off-Broadway play Eureka Day in 2019. In the summer of 2023, he stepped into the role of Serebryakov in an off-off-Broadway production of Uncle Vanya staged in an unmarked Manhattan loft, replacing Bill Irwin for a run that lasted from August 8 through August 25 of that year.
