About
Thomas Gomez (July 10, 1905 – June 18, 1971) was an American actor born in New York City whose career spanned stage, film, and television. His father, Sabino Tomás Gómez, was of Spanish heritage with roots in Gibraltar and Santander, Spain, while his mother's background was French-Irish, tracing to Alsace and County Cork. His parents migrated to New York City shortly before his birth.
Gomez began his acting career in 1923, studying under actor Walter Hampden in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac in Syracuse, New York. His Broadway career extended from 1925 to 1961 and encompassed a wide range of productions, including Sherlock Holmes, Hamlet, Beggar's Holiday, the drama There Shall Be No Night, and the comedy The Flowers of Virtue. Billboard recognized his work in The Flowers of Virtue, praising the humanity and finely effective detail of his character work in the short-running 1942 production. He also appeared in the original Broadway run of A Man for All Seasons, and in 1956 replaced Burl Ives as Big Daddy in Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof during its original Broadway production.
Gomez made his film debut in Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror in 1942 and went on to appear in sixty films over the course of his career. He became the first Spanish-American to receive an Academy Award nomination, earning the distinction for his performance in the 1947 film Ride the Pink Horse, which was directed by and starred Robert Montgomery. Gomez later reprised his role from that film in an episode of the television series Robert Montgomery Presents. His other film credits include Who Done It? (1942), Key Largo (1948), Force of Evil (1948), The Conqueror (1956), and Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), which served as his final film appearance.
On television, Gomez appeared as a guest performer across numerous series, including The Twilight Zone, Route 66, Dr. Kildare, Mr. Ed, Burke's Law, The Virginian, It Takes a Thief, Bewitched, The Rifleman, and Gunsmoke. Gomez died on June 18, 1971, at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 65, following three weeks in a coma resulting from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
