About

Thom Allison is a Canadian actor born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the son of a Black Nova Scotian father and a Mennonite mother. He trained at the Ryerson Theatre School acting program before launching a career that spans stage, film, and television.

Allison began working professionally in the early 1990s and established himself primarily as a stage actor. A significant early milestone came in 2000, when he played Robin Turner in Canadian Stage's production of Outrageous!, an adaptation of the Canadian stage work. That performance earned him a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role – Musical in 2001. He has appeared regularly at both the Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival, the latter of which recognized him with two Tyrone Guthrie Awards. His stage work also includes touring productions of Rent and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

In 2011, Allison made his Broadway appearance in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Beyond Broadway and the major Canadian festivals, he accumulated nominations across numerous Canadian theatre award bodies over the course of his career, including three Dora awards, two Bettys, two Jessies, an Ovation, and a Sterling.

In 2003, Allison recorded a solo CD titled A Whole Lotta Sunlight, a collection of well-known songs that included "Moon River" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." In 2019, he collaborated with Micah Barnes on Knishes 'n Grits, a stage production examining the connections between Jewish music and African American music.

On television, Allison became widely recognized for his recurring role as Pree in the science fiction series Killjoys. That performance brought him the Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 8th Canadian Screen Awards. He also appeared on screen as drag queen Therese in the first episode of Kim's Convenience.
