About
Theresa Thomason is an American Gospel music singer and Broadway performer whose career has spanned more than two decades across multiple genres and continents.
Thomason built an early profile through the club single Fresh Enuff, which reached radio airwaves, and through a notable performance at the Apollo Theater in New York City. She subsequently toured Europe for over ten years, appearing in more than 150 cities, and later extended that international presence with sold-out concerts at the Zenith in Strasbourg, France, and at Les Dominicains De Haute Alsace, the latter marking a first for the Protestant Union in France. She has also performed at the Vatican, in 2005, and at the United Nations for the Dalai Lama.
A long-standing association with the Grammy Award-winning Paul Winter Consort has placed Thomason at the annual Solstice, Missa Gaia, and Earth Mass celebrations held at St. John the Divine cathedral in New York City, many of which were broadcast on PBS and NBC. Her collaborators over the years have included Pete Seeger, renowned conductor John Rutter, actor and activist Ruby Dee, and jazz group FRENS. In 1999, she worked with composer Paul Halley on the Pelagos recording of "Sound Over All Waters," a piece the two have continued to perform across Europe, New Zealand, New York, Canada, and Connecticut. She also served as featured soloist on the jazz project Breakaway by Paul Sullivan of River Music.
Thomason contributed vocals to the American progressive metal band Dream Theater's album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory and subsequently appeared onstage with the band during their Metropolis 2000 world tour. In addition to reprising her recorded vocal parts, she performed on "The Spirit Carries On" and improvised over a John Petrucci guitar solo during a segment billed as "John and Theresa Solo Spot." Those performances were captured and released on DVD and CD as Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York. She continued performing with Dream Theater, delivering Clare Torry's vocal improvisation on "The Great Gig in the Sky" when the band covered Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam on October 11, 2005, and at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on October 25, 2005. The London performance was released on DVD and CD through Dream Theater's YtseJam Records.
In 2004, Thomason released her first solo recording, Ten Hymns, an acoustic gospel project issued through Sacred Sounds Music. She has also developed her own musical production, titled "The Sisterhood."
In 2006, Thomason appeared on Broadway in Hot Feet, the musical conceived, choreographed, and directed by Maurice Hines and built around music from Earth, Wind & Fire.
