About
Theodore St. John was an American actor, writer, and director born in New York, New York in 1906, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and radio. He died in 1956 from self-inflicted stab wounds.
St. John was active on Broadway between 1926 and 1932, appearing in a number of productions during that period. His stage credits include The Distant Shore, Adams' Wife, Only the Young, Blue Monday, The Warrior's Husband, and Ghosts, the latter a 1927 Broadway production in which he performed as an actor. In addition to acting, he worked as a book writer for Broadway.
His work in film brought him significant recognition. St. John contributed to the screenplay for The Greatest Show on Earth, released in 1952, and the following year received an Academy Award for Best Motion Picture Story for that film. The honor was shared with co-writers Fredric M. Frank and Frank Cavett. He also wrote the screenplay for Fort Algiers in 1953.
St. John served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 before returning to his work in the entertainment industry.
