About
Theo Stockman, born December 27, 1984, in Brookline, Massachusetts, is an American actor, singer, and DJ whose work spans Broadway, Off-Broadway, film, and television. He is the son of author Jayne Anne Phillips and physician Mark Stockman. Stockman graduated from Concord Academy in 2003, where he performed as Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream and in multiple roles in The Laramie Project. During his senior year, he adapted The Perks of Being a Wallflower for the stage and directed the production as part of the school's Directors Seminar. He also co-founded the Lizard Husbandry Club at the academy. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2007, having studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, the Experimental Theatre Wing, and the International Theatre Workshop in Amsterdam. While at NYU, he portrayed Claude Bukowski in a production of Hair in which all cast members shaved their heads. In 2007, he played Dionysus in The Bacchae at the International Theatre Festival in Warsaw, earning the award for Best Lead Actor.
Stockman's Broadway career began in 2009 as an original cast member of the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair, in which he performed as a Member of the Tribe and portrayed the characters Hubert, the Nazi Principal, and John Wilkes Booth. The production originated with a 40th anniversary concert at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park before transferring to Broadway. He subsequently joined American Idiot, appearing in workshops and the original run at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, which opened on September 4, 2009, before the show transferred to the St. James Theatre on Broadway, where it opened on April 20, 2010. Stockman played the Representative of Jingletown and remained with the production until January 30, 2011. He returned to Broadway in 2016 with American Psycho, a musical written by Duncan Sheik and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, in which he played Timothy Price.
Away from Broadway, Stockman appeared in the 2012 Off-Broadway play An Early History of Fire by David Rabe, produced by The New Group, playing Danny Mueller. In the summer of 2018, he starred as Steve Rubell in the world premiere of This Ain't No Disco at the Atlantic Theater Company, a musical written by Stephen Trask and Peter Yanowitz. In 2022, he played the villainous Ashby Givens in the world premiere of Black No More at The New Group, written by Black Thought and John Ridley. He also appeared as Caliban in the Public Works Public Theater production of William Shakespeare's The Tempest at the Delacorte Theatre, opposite Renée Elise Goldsberry.
In film, Stockman portrayed Donnie Anderson in Peter Askin's 2013 adaptation of Stephen King's novella A Good Marriage. On television, his credits include recurring roles as Josh on Netflix's Bonding, written and directed by Rightor Doyle, and as Jacob on Apple TV+'s WeCrashed, which stars Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway. He plays suspect Ezra Fisher on ABC's Alaska Daily, starring Hilary Swank. Additional television appearances include Inside Amy Schumer, High Maintenance, Private Practice, The Following, Shades of Blue, Law & Order: SVU, and a guest role on Only Murders in the Building, opposite Meryl Streep and Martin Short.
