About
Thayne Riley Jasperson, born July 27, 1980, in Provo, Utah, is an American actor, singer, and choreographer whose career spans film, television, and stage, with his most prominent work centered on Broadway. After spending his early childhood in Green River, Wyoming, he later lived in Evanston before returning to Utah for high school, graduating from Springville High School. By age nine he had begun studying piano, musicals, and clog dancing, and though he briefly stepped away from performance after peers discouraged him, his interest in theatre resurfaced during a two-year Mormon mission he undertook at nineteen in Argentina. He returned to performing full-time around July 2001 and subsequently earned a degree from Utah Valley University.
Before reaching Broadway, Jasperson built his performance foundation through regional and touring work. In 2004 he played George Washington's courier in a Hale Center Theatre production of 1776, and in 2006 he took on the role of Mungojerrie in Cats at Tuacahn Amphitheatre, later returning to that venue as a swing in Annie and playing the lead role of Ren in Footloose in 2009. In 2010 he understudied both the title role and the role of Terk in Tuacahn's production of Tarzan. That same year he joined the First U.S. National Tour of West Side Story, serving as a swing and understudying the roles of A-Rab, Baby John, and Big Deal through 2012.
Jasperson's screen credits predate his Broadway career. He appeared as a brainiac dancer in the 2006 film High School Musical and returned for its 2007 sequel, High School Musical 2. In 2008 he competed as a top-twelve finalist on season four of So You Think You Can Dance and performed in MTV's The American Mall. He danced in the 2012 pilot of Smash and appeared briefly in the season two finale of Submissions Only.
His Broadway debut came in 2012 with the original cast of Newsies the Musical, where he played Darcy, JoJo, and ensemble, and performed with the company at the 66th Annual Tony Awards. The following year he joined the original Broadway cast of Matilda the Musical as an ensemble member, understudying the roles of the Doctor and Michael Wormwood and participating in the show's performance at the 2013 Tony Awards. In 2014 he appeared regionally at the American Repertory Theatre, playing the dog Porthos in Finding Neverland.
Also in January 2014, Jasperson took part in the first workshop of Hamilton, the musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He continued through subsequent workshops and both the Off-Broadway and Broadway openings in 2015, originating the role of Samuel Seabury while also performing in the ensemble and understudying the roles of John Laurens/Philip Hamilton and King George III. He is featured as Seabury in the professional cast recording, made shortly after the show's appearance at the 70th Tony Awards in June 2016, at which he performed alongside the Broadway cast. Hamilton received 16 Tony nominations and won 11 awards. Jasperson remained with the production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, with the exception of a period in late 2022 when he joined the Off-Broadway production of Only Gold. A miniseries titled At Home (The Richard Rodgers), featuring Jasperson as its main subject, was announced in March 2025 and concluded around June 2025, with episodes posted on Hamilton's official social media accounts. On June 8, 2025, he performed with original Broadway cast members of Hamilton at the 78th Annual Tony Awards.
Beyond performing, Jasperson has worked as a choreographer and educator. In December 2024 he choreographed Hamilton's performance at Red Bucket Follies, and shortly afterward provided lead vocals for the song "Give Santa The Sack" by Utsav Bhargava. He teaches Hamilton choreography in New York City through in-person and online classes and has also taught students at a middle school in the town where he grew up. As of August 2020, he was developing a show he planned to both choreograph and perform in.
Jasperson is a member of the LDS Church and identifies as bisexual. He currently lives in uptown New York.
