About
Terry Schreiber, born March 7, 1937, in Winona, Minnesota, is an American actor, theater director, acting teacher, and the founder of the T. Schreiber Studio in New York City. His career spans performance, direction, and education across more than four decades of work in the American theater.
Schreiber appeared on Broadway as a performer in 1963, with a credit in Andorra. He subsequently built a career as a director, working in New York from 1976 onward at venues including the Longacre Theatre, the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, the Circle Repertory Theatre, and the Roundabout Theatre. His Broadway directing credits include the Tony Award-winning play K2, which also received a Tony nomination, as well as Devour the Snow and The Trip Back Down, the latter starring John Cullum. Off-Broadway, he directed Desire Under the Elms at the Roundabout Theatre with Kathy Baker and Feedlot at Circle Repertory with Jeff Daniels.
His regional theater work brought him to institutions including the Guthrie Theatre, Syracuse Stage, the Hartman Theatre Company, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, George Street Playhouse, and Buffalo Arena Stage, where he directed productions featuring Celeste Holm and Betty Buckley. Schreiber has also directed numerous American plays in Japan and taught at the French American Cinema Theatre in Paris.
At the T. Schreiber Studio, he has directed productions of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke, Yasmine B. Rana's The Fallen and Blood Sky, and a wide range of classical and contemporary works including Hedda Gabler, Uncle Vanya, The Seagull, Hamlet, The Iceman Cometh, The Crucible, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Cherry Orchard, How I Learned to Drive, and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, among others.
Schreiber's teaching career is documented in Eva Mekler's The New Generation of Acting Teachers. His students have included Edward Norton, Mary Louise Parker, Judith Light, Cynthia Nixon, Wendy Wasserstein, Amy Ryan, John Patrick Shanley, Marian Seldes, Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson, Betty Buckley, Julie Halston, Roger Berlind, Gerald Schoenfeld, Marc Geller, Anthony Aibel, and Jonny Orsini. He is the author of Acting: Advanced Techniques for the Actor, Director, and Teacher, published by Allworth Press in 2005 and now in its third printing, as well as Producing on a Short Shoelace, available in e-book form.
