About
Terence Longdon, born Hubert Tuelly Longdon on 14 May 1922 in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England, was an English actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television across several decades. He died on 23 April 2011 from cancer at the age of 88, having spent his later years living on the border of Gloucestershire and Warwickshire.
Longdon's path to acting began during World War II, when he served as a pilot with the Fleet Air Arm, flying missions to protect Atlantic convoys. While stationed at a naval base near Blackpool, he appeared in a show where actor Douglas Hurn saw him perform and encouraged him to pursue acting professionally. Following the war, Longdon trained at RADA from 1946 to 1948, made his first stage appearance at the Lyceum in Sheffield in 1948, and debuted in the West End that same year. In 1954, he appeared on Broadway in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
On British television, Longdon became best known for his lead role in the 1950s–1960s series Garry Halliday, in which he played a Biggles-like pilot navigating various adventure situations. He also co-wrote one episode of the series in 1962. His television work extended to character roles in productions including The Sandbaggers, Danger Man, and The Avengers.
His film career included a role as Drusus, Messala's personal aide, in Ben-Hur, as well as a major supporting role in the 1958 film Another Time, Another Place, which starred Sean Connery and Lana Turner. Longdon appeared in four of the early Carry On films and took a small role in The Woman for Joe. He also played a leading role in the 1963 thriller Clash by Night.
