About

Tener Brown, born Carolyn Tener Brown in 1960 and raised in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, is an American ballet dancer, actress, and coach. Her training began at the New Jersey School of Ballet at age seven, and she demonstrated exceptional technical ability from an early age. In 1971, choreographers George Tomal and Joseph Carow incorporated demanding pointework and fouettés into New Jersey Ballet's inaugural production of The Nutcracker specifically to suit Brown's capabilities. She performed the role of Clara on opening night at Paper Mill Playhouse, sharing the stage with Edward Villella, who danced the role of Cavalier. Two years later, in 1973, Villella choreographed Shenandoah Pas de Deux for New Jersey Ballet and chose Brown as his partner for the duet.

Brown joined American Ballet Theatre in 1979, advancing through corps, soloist, and principal roles over the course of seven years. Following her time with ABT, she transitioned into musical theatre, film, and television work. Her Broadway career included an appearance in The Phantom of the Opera in 1988, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical in which she performed both as part of the Ballet Chorus of the Opera Populaire and in the role of Meg Giry.

Beyond Broadway, Brown accumulated a range of additional stage, screen, and television credits. Her theatrical work included Hair, Carousel, Brigadoon, La Cage Aux Folles, and Fame the Musical, in which she played Iris Kelly. Her television appearances encompassed the soap operas All My Children and Loving, as well as The Sopranos and various PBS programs. Her film credits include Fletch II and The Saint.

Brown subsequently returned to the world of ballet, serving as a repertory coach for New Jersey Ballet and a teacher at the New Jersey School of Ballet.
