About
Templar Saxe, born Templer William Edward Edevein on August 22, 1865, in Redhill, Surrey, England, was a British stage actor, opera singer, and silent film actor. He died on April 17, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Saxe was the son of Lady de Capel Broke and Eaton Edeveain, a London barrister and journalist of some prominence. Though he initially considered a career in the diplomatic service, he ultimately turned to performing. His Broadway career spanned from 1901 to 1906 and encompassed a range of productions, including The Moon Is Blue, Arms and the Girl, the musicals Piff! Paff!! Pouf!!!, An English Daisy, and The Sultan of Sulu. In 1901, he appeared in Alfred E. Aarons' production of The Ladies' Paradise at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. By 1905, he was starring in The Earl and the Girl at the Casino Theatre, a performance for which The New York Times praised his singing.
Saxe also built a substantial career in silent film, where he typically took on character roles. Because silent films could not capture his singing voice, his work in that medium drew on his acting abilities rather than his vocal talents. His film appearances began with Beauty Unadorned in 1913 and continued through the following decade and a half, including roles in The Teeth of the Tiger in 1919 and When a Man Loves in 1927.
