About
Ted Keegan is an American musical theatre actor whose Broadway career spans from 1988 to 1996 and beyond, with credits including The Phantom of the Opera, Camelot, Cyrano, Sweeney Todd, and Angela Lansbury - A Celebration. He is best known for his association with The Phantom of the Opera, in which he performed the title role across the United States for more than 25 years.
Keegan's connection to the Broadway production of Phantom began in a supporting capacity, with his regular role as Monsieur Reyer. In 1999, he was elevated to the principal role of the Phantom on Broadway, stepping in for Hugh Panaro for one month before Howard McGillin assumed the part. That succession made Keegan the twelfth actor to hold the principal Phantom role in the Broadway production. Also in 1999, he began a four-year engagement as the Phantom in the third U.S. national tour of the show. In 2006, he joined the Las Vegas company of Phantom in the same title role.
Keegan returned to the Broadway production in 2010, this time as Monsieur André, and remained affiliated with the company on and off for the following decade, serving in multiple roles while also functioning as a Phantom understudy. Following the shutdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, he became a permanent member of the Broadway company as the Jeweller in Il Muto, beginning with the production's first performance after the shutdown on October 22, 2021. He remained with the company through its final performance on April 16, 2023.
During the last two weeks of the Broadway run, with principal Phantom Ben Crawford ill, Keegan alternated in the title role alongside Jeremy Stolle and Laird Mackintosh. His final performance as the Phantom came at the April 15, 2023 matinee, making him the penultimate actor to portray the role in the original Broadway production.
