About
Tavie Belge was the American stage name of Octavie Belloy, a Belgian singer and actress born on March 12, 1894, in the Borgerhout district of Antwerp. She died on May 13, 1965, at the age of 71. Her father, Petrus Franciscus Belloy, was a dancer, and her mother was Maria Van Leemput. Raised in an artistic household, Belloy began working in theatre at the age of six and pursued vocal training in Antwerp. By the time she was sixteen, she had joined the Royal Flemish Opera.
When World War I broke out, Belloy fled Belgium on foot as a refugee. After reaching London, she experienced a temporary paralysis, which she attributed to the shock of her wartime displacement. During the war years, she performed at numerous concerts in support of war relief efforts across England, Canada, and the United States.
In 1918, performing under the name Tavie Belge, she made her Broadway debut in the operetta Fiddlers Three. Contemporary accounts described her voice as a rich dramatic soprano of fine range and wonderfully even quality and tone.
In 1919, Belge married Marechal Emile P. Hendrickx, a childhood friend she had encountered again in New York while he was serving as secretary of the Belgian War Mission to the United States. The couple had one son, Reginald. The family returned to Belgium, where Emile owned a hotel in Antwerp and Octavie resumed her association with the Royal Flemish Opera. During the 1920s she made several recordings in Belgium. She retired from singing by 1926 but remained employed by the Opera until 1935. Emile Hendrickx died in 1944.
A rail station and community in Alberta, Canada, were named Belloy in recognition of her wartime singing for soldiers and her contributions to war relief causes. The Belloy Formation, a nearby geological feature, subsequently took its name from that community. Her personal papers are preserved in the archives of the Letterenhuis.
