About

Tatyana Marisol Ali was born on January 24, 1979, in North Bellmore, New York, and is of mixed African and South Asian ancestry, with an Indo-Trinidadian father and an Afro-Panamanian mother. Originally associated with Brooklyn, New York, Ali is an American actress and singer whose career has spanned television, film, music, and the Broadway stage.

Ali began performing at age six in 1985 as a regular on the PBS children's educational program Sesame Street, where she appeared alongside jazz musician Herbie Hancock during a segment in which he demonstrated his Fairlight CMI synthesizer using a sample of her voice. She also competed on Star Search, including an episode in which she performed a cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell hit. Her Broadway career began in 1987, when she appeared in Fences. In 1990, she was cast as Ashley Banks on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a role she held for the entirety of the series' run through 1996. She won the Young Artist Award for Outstanding Young Comedienne in a Television Series for that role in 1991 and received nominations in the same category in 1992, 1993, and 1994. She also received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Youth Actor/Actress for the role in 1996 and a nomination in 1997.

During the later seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Ali's singing drew the attention of her co-star Will Smith, who encouraged her to pursue a music career. She released her debut album, Kiss the Sky, in 1998. The album was certified gold in early 1999 and produced the single "Daydreamin'," which was produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, released on July 21, 1998, and peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Two additional singles charted in the United Kingdom: "Boy You Knock Me Out," featuring Will Smith, peaked at number three, and "Everytime" reached number twenty. Ali also appeared on Smith's album Willennium on the track "Who Am I," alongside MC Lyte. In 2005, she performed the title song "Sunny Valentine" with Terrence Quaites for the independent film Rockin' Meera. In early 2008, she contributed to "Yes We Can," a will.i.am project supporting Barack Obama's presidential campaign, and appeared in the accompanying music video. In January 2014, she released an EP titled Hello, with the lead single "Wait For It," which she performed on The Arsenio Hall Show on February 4, 2014.

Beyond music, Ali continued working in film and television. Her film credits include The Brothers, Glory Road, and Nora's Hair Salon and its sequel. From 2007 to 2013, she played the recurring role of Roxanne on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, earning NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama in 2010 and wins in that category in 2011 and 2012. She produced and starred in the BET web series Buppies from 2009 to 2010. She starred as Tyana Jones in the TV One original series Love That Girl!, receiving NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series in 2011, 2012, and 2013. In 2013, she co-starred as Maya in the BET comedy Second Generation Wayans alongside Craig Wayans and Damien Dante Wayans. In 2023, she starred in Giving Hope: The Ni'Cola Mitchell Story on Lifetime. In 2011, Ali received the Living Legacy Award from the Caribbean Heritage Organization in Los Angeles.

Ali graduated from The Buckley School in 1997 and attended Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Studies and Government in 2002. She traveled across the United States as a spokesperson for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and led voter registration drives at college campuses. In March 2016, she announced her engagement to Vaughn Rasberry, an English professor at Stanford University, whom she had met through eHarmony, and revealed the couple was expecting their first child. Ali and Rasberry married on July 17, 2016, in Beverly Hills, California, and have two sons. Rasberry has since become an associate professor and associate vice provost for graduate education at Stanford. On July 27, 2024, Ali was inducted as an honorary member of Zeta Phi Beta at the sorority's Boulé in Indianapolis, Indiana.
