Tamika Sonja Lawrence is an American actress, singer, and writer whose Broadway career spans from 2011 to 2024. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre from the University of Arizona.
Lawrence launched her professional stage career with an off-Broadway appearance in the 2011 revival of Rent, where she performed as the "Seasons of Love" Soloist. Her Broadway credits include Matilda The Musical, If/Then, Dear Evan Hansen, Gettin' The Band Back Together, and The Heart of Rock and Roll, among other productions, bringing her total Broadway appearances to seven shows.
Beyond her stage work, Lawrence has pursued a recording career. In 2017, she released the album UGLY with her band, The Slay. The following year, she earned a Grammy Award for the Dear Evan Hansen cast album. Lawrence subsequently announced a debut solo record, Two Faced, slated for release in 2019. Her Grammy for Dear Evan Hansen was one of two Grammy wins in her career.
Lawrence has also worked in television and film. Her off-Broadway work continued to earn recognition beyond the 2011 Rent revival; for her portrayal of Buni in the original off-Broadway production of Black No More, she received a 2022 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical and a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical.
