About

Tamara Tunie is an American actress, singer, director, and producer born on March 14, 1959, in Homestead, Pennsylvania, where she was the fourth of six children raised in a family-operated funeral home by her parents, James W. Tunie and Evelyn Hawkins Tunie. As a child, she sang in her church choir, participated in her high school band, and took dance lessons. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from Carnegie Mellon University in 1981 and was elected to the university's Board of Trustees in 2020. Her Broadway career spans from 1981 to 2005, with credits including Lena Horne: "The Lady and Her Music," Dreamgirls, Julius Caesar, and the musical Oh, Kay!

Tunie made her Broadway debut in 1981 alongside Lena Horne in Lena Horne: "The Lady and Her Music." Her stage work earned her a Tony Award for Best Musical in 2007 and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical in 2007, both for the Broadway production of Spring Awakening. In 2016, she received an Obie Award for Distinguished Performance for her role in Familiar, written by Danai Gurira. In 2022, she portrayed Kamala Harris in The 47th at the Old Vic theatre in London.

Her film career began with Sweet Lorraine opposite Maureen Stapleton, followed by a role in Wall Street in 1987. Subsequent film credits include Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989), Rising Sun (1993), City Hall (1996), in which she played Al Pacino's press secretary, Eve's Bayou (1997), The Peacemaker (1997), The Devil's Advocate (1997), in which she again appeared alongside Pacino, and Snake Eyes (1998). Her performance in The Caveman's Valentine (2001), based on George Dawes Green's novel and starring Samuel L. Jackson, earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. She appeared in the Robert Zemeckis-directed drama Flight (2012) as Margaret Thomason opposite Denzel Washington, and played Cissy Houston in the 2022 biographical film Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, directed by Kasi Lemmons.

On television, Tunie is widely recognized for two long-running roles. From 1987 to 1995, and again from 1999 to 2007, she starred as attorney Jessica Griffin on the CBS daytime soap opera As the World Turns, receiving NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series in both 2003 and 2004. Beginning in 2000, she joined the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as medical examiner Melinda Warner, debuting in the second-season episode "Noncompliance." She transitioned from a recurring role to a series regular in Season 7 and continued making appearances through 2021, with the role extending into Law & Order: Trial by Jury in 2005, a 2015 episode of Chicago Fire, and a 2024 appearance in Season 4 of Law & Order: Organized Crime, reuniting with Christopher Meloni. In 2002, she played Alberta Green in the first season of the Fox thriller series 24. Additional television credits include a recurring role as Lillian Fancy on NYPD Blue from 1994 to 1997, guest appearances on Law & Order, Chicago Hope, New York Undercover, Sex and the City, and The Good Wife, a regular role in the Sundance TV drama The Red Road from 2014 to 2015, a recurring role as Monica Graham on Blue Bloods from 2016 to 2018, and regular roles in both Dietland and Black Earth Rising in 2018. Since early 2025, she has played family matriarch Anita Dupree on the CBS daytime soap opera Beyond the Gates.

Tunie made her directorial debut with the 2010 romantic comedy film See You in September. She is the 2025–2026 Artist-In-Residence for MCG Jazz in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her philanthropic work includes involvement with Figure Skating in Harlem, Harlem Stage/The Gatehouse, and God's Love We Deliver. In 2005, Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented her with New York City's "Made in New York Award" in recognition of her contributions to film, television, and theater in Manhattan. Tunie was married to Greg Bouquett from 1988 to 1991 and subsequently to jazz musician Gregory Generet from 1995 to 2018.
