About
Tamara Daykarhanova (January 14, 1889 – August 6, 1980) was a Moscow-born actress and acting coach whose career spanned from the Russian stage to the Broadway theater and the New York City teaching world. Born in Moscow in the Russian Empire, she began her professional life at the Moscow Art Theatre before emigrating to the United States, settling in New York City in 1929.
Following her arrival in New York, Daykarhanova co-founded a drama school alongside Akim Tamiroff and Maria Ouspenskaya. She led the institution as its head, continuing in that role until her retirement in 1971.
Her Broadway career extended from 1951 to 1964 and included appearances in The Three Sisters, The Emperor's Clothes, and The House of Bernarda Alba.
Daykarhanova died on August 6, 1980, at the Inglemoor Nursing Home in Englewood, New Jersey, at the age of 91.
