About

Tam Mutu is an English stage and screen actor born on April 30, 1978, in Hastings, England. Of Turkish and Italian descent, Mutu grew up playing football before turning to acting. He trained at the Guildford School of Acting, earning a Bachelor of Arts with honors in musical theatre upon graduating in 2001.

Following his graduation, Mutu joined the long-running West End production of Les Misérables as a replacement ensemble member and understudy for the role of Enjolras. Over the next several years he worked with the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and participated in the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's 2002 season. In 2010, he became part of the original ensemble of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. He began as the understudy for Ramin Karimloo's Phantom before becoming the alternate for the role. After the production closed, he starred in a Toronto production of Chess.

Mutu had been set to make his Broadway debut in the gothic musical Rebecca in 2011, but the production was cancelled. Shortly after that postponement in 2012, he was cast to replace the role of Javert in the West End revival of Les Misérables. The production ran through 2013 and 2014 and won the Olivier Audience Award in 2014; Mutu received individual recognition for his performance from BroadwayWorld and the West End Frame Awards. He subsequently starred in the Olivier Award-winning revival of City of Angels, which opened at the Donmar Warehouse in December 2014.

Mutu relocated to the United States in 2015 to star in the original Broadway production of Doctor Zhivago, though the show closed after approximately one month. That same year and into 2016, he appeared in readings of Flying Over Sunset, playing Cary Grant. He participated in the Encores! concert series and regional theatre work during this period, and in 2017 filmed the second season of the Netflix series Medici in Italy. Also in 2017, he played Archibald Craven in the 5th Avenue Theatre production of The Secret Garden.

In 2018, Mutu was cast as the antagonist the Duke of Monroth in the pre-Broadway engagement of Moulin Rouge! The Musical. The production transferred to Broadway and opened in July 2019. When the show was paused in March 2020, Mutu contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized. The production resumed in September 2021, and Mutu remained with the cast until his departure in May 2022 alongside original cast members Aaron Tveit and Ricky Rojas. His performance as the Duke of Monroth earned him a Grammy Award nomination. In 2023, he played Bill Sikes in the Encores! production of Oliver. Mutu also appeared on Broadway in Chicago.

On screen, Mutu had a recurring role in the Netflix series Medici. He is noted for his baritone voice. Mutu is married to Kristen "Kem" Martin, a fellow Broadway actor, and was previously engaged to actress Sierra Boggess, with whom he had performed in both Love Never Dies and Rebecca.
