About
Talia Balsam is an American actress born in New York City in 1959. She is the daughter of actors Martin Balsam and Joyce Van Patten, and her family connections to the entertainment industry extend further through her uncle Dick Van Patten, her aunt Pat Van Patten, and her uncle Tim Van Patten, an actor and director. Her cousin Grace Van Patten is also an actress. Balsam's father is of Russian Jewish descent, while her mother's background is Italian, Dutch, and English.
Balsam launched her career with a recurring role on the ABC sitcom Happy Days and went on to appear in a wide range of television series, including Dallas, Taxi, Hill Street Blues, Family Ties, Magnum, P.I., and The Larry Sanders Show. She also took on leading roles in the films Crawlspace (1986) and In the Mood (1987), and appeared in several television movies, among them Kent State (1981), Nadia (1984), and Consenting Adult (1985). Her television work continued through the 1990s and 2000s with appearances on Without a Trace (2003–04) and L.A. Doctors (1998–99), as well as a supporting role in the film The Cake Eaters (2007).
On Broadway, Balsam appeared in Neil Simon's Jake's Women in 1992, a credit for which she received the Theatre World Award that same year.
Among her most prominent later roles, Balsam played Mona Sterling in the AMC period drama Mad Men from 2007 to 2014. In 2012, she joined the cast of the Showtime series Homeland in a recurring role as Cynthia Walden. From 2016 to 2019, she starred alongside Sarah Jessica Parker in the HBO comedy series Divorce.
In her personal life, Balsam married actor George Clooney in Las Vegas in 1989; the two divorced in 1993. Since 1998, she has been married to actor John Slattery, with whom she has a son. The couple wed in Kauaʻi, Hawaii, and later portrayed the married couple Roger and Mona Sterling together on Mad Men. As of 2015, Balsam resided with her family in SoHo, Manhattan.
