About
Szymon Symcha Szurmiej was a Polish actor, director, and theater administrator born on 18 June 1923 in Lutsk, Volhynian Voivodeship. His father, Jan Szurmiej, was Polish, and his mother, Rebeka (Ryfka), née Biterman, was Jewish. Szurmiej died on 16 July 2014 in Warsaw.
Szurmiej made his acting debut in 1951 at the Polish Theater in Wrocław. His career eventually brought him to Broadway, where he appeared in 1967 in Mother Courage and Her Children. In 1969 he relocated to Warsaw, where he assumed the role of general manager of the Ester Rachel Kamińska and Ida Kamińska State Jewish Theater. He also served as a director of the Yiddish Theater of Warsaw.
Beyond his work in theater, Szurmiej was an active member of various Jewish organizations in Poland and internationally, including the World Jewish Congress. In July 2004 he was granted honorary citizenship of Warsaw. In 2007, Polish writer Krystyna Gucewicz-Przybora published a biography devoted to his life and career.
