About
Sylvia Kauders (née Wolinsky; December 1, 1921 – May 5, 2016) was an American actress whose Broadway career included an appearance in Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy. Born in Philadelphia to Russian immigrants Morris and Sadie (née Pincus) Wolinsky, she grew up in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. After her father died when she was ten, her mother supported the family by operating a grocery store. Kauders attended Upper Darby High School and earned a degree in English and social studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942, later taking additional coursework at Temple University to fulfill teaching requirements.
Her professional life before acting was varied and accomplished. Unable to find work directly through her college education, she learned shorthand and typing and in the mid-1940s joined the Jewish Community Relations Council as a secretary, eventually advancing to assistant to the organization's public relations director. In 1950 she moved into Philadelphia's information office, where she built a career spanning decades, rising from information officer to special events coordinator to director. In that capacity she worked alongside five current and former presidents of the United States and organized events involving mayors, celebrities, and dignitaries. Her promotional work for the city included appearances on the television program Under Billy Penn's Hat. Kauders served as the first woman president of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association from 1972 to 1973 and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1976.
At the age of 55, in 1977, Kauders made the decision to pursue acting seriously and relocated to New York City. Her Broadway debut came in 1982 when she appeared in Torch Song Trilogy, playing Mrs. Beckoff, the role that had been originated by Estelle Getty. Her run in the production extended through 1983. Her stage work also included a production of Crossing Delancey at the Jewish Repertory Theater, for which New York Times critic Richard F. Shepard described her as an "entirely lovable Bubbie ... a peppery lady whose charm is a mask for a determination to carry out her schemes."
Kauders accumulated a substantial body of film work. Woody Allen cast her in Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) and Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993). Her other film credits include Predator 2 (1990), City Hall (1996), Analyze That (2002), American Splendor, and My Life (1993), in which she played the aunt of Diane Keaton's character. Her final film appearances were in Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and Love the Coopers (2015). On television, she appeared in The Equalizer (1985), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and during the final season of the HBO series The Sopranos, where she played a foul-mouthed elderly neighborhood woman who enlists Tony's help with a local problem.
Kauders was married to Randy Kauders for approximately four decades until his death in the 1990s. She died on May 5, 2016, at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia at the age of 94.
