About
Dorothy Anna Sturgess was born on March 5, 1915, in Ipoh, Malaya, the eldest of four children with two brothers and one sister. Known professionally as Sydney Sturgess, she was a British-Canadian actress whose stage work spanned more than fifty years across Canada, England, and the United States. She died on September 30, 1999, at the age of 84.
Sturgess came from a family with notable Canadian roots. Her great-grandfather was Edward Palmer, Q.C., of Prince Edward Island, one of the Fathers of Confederation. Her father worked as a civil engineer on assignments in remote countries around the world, which meant the family traveled extensively during her childhood. She spent much of her adolescence at St. Stephen's boarding school in Folkestone, Kent, England, and received her dramatic training at the London College of Music, where she earned an A.L.C.M. in elocution. Following her graduation, she joined the Arthur Brough Players in Folkestone, beginning as a student before transitioning to performing as an actress.
Her early professional years were spent working in English repertory companies, through which she accumulated experience in hundreds of stage productions during the 1930s and 1940s. Among her London West End credits was a production of The First Mrs. Fraser, in which she appeared alongside Dame Marie Tempest and A.E. Matthews. On January 3, 1939, she met actor Barry Morse in Peterborough, and the two married on March 26 of that year. Their daughter Melanie Morse MacQuarrie was born in 1945 and their son Hayward Morse in 1947. The family emigrated to Canada in 1951.
Following the move to Canada, Sturgess performed at the Montreal Mountain Playhouse for several seasons and also took on radio work and teaching. When television arrived in Toronto, the family relocated there in 1953. Her Canadian stage credits included Jupiter Theatre's production of Relative Values, The Potting Shed at the Crest Theatre, and appearances with the Canadian Players in Romeo and Juliet and Pygmalion. She played Mrs. Darling in Peter Pan, appeared in George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman, and performed in multiple productions of Charley's Aunt. She also starred as the Countess of Brocklehurst in the Shaw Festival's production of The Admirable Crichton, appeared in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, and played Mrs. Higgins in a production of Shaw's Pygmalion at the Nottingham Playhouse in England. Her stage work included seasons at both the Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival of Canada.
In 1958, Sturgess wrote and produced a radio series for the CBC titled Poet's Corner. Her television work included the role of Catherine de Medici in Patrick Watson's series Witness to Yesterday and the title role in George Bernard Shaw's Catherine the Great.
Sturgess made her Broadway appearance in 1969 in Hadrian VII, performing opposite her husband Barry Morse and Alec McCowen. Beyond the stage, she occasionally worked in film and television throughout her career. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1985 and lived with the illness for more than fourteen years before dying in her sleep.
