About
Sydney Shields (May 6, 1888 – September 19, 1960) was an American stage actress born in New Orleans, Louisiana, whose Broadway career spanned from 1915 to 1934. She was the eldest of five children born to Bernard C. and Elizabeth "Bessie" M. (née Smallwood) Shields. Her father worked as an attorney and accountant and held several public positions over the course of his career, including Louisiana State Legislator, New Orleans City Council member, director of New Orleans Public Schools, and Assistant Secretary of the Board of Liquidation City Debt of New Orleans. Her mother was among the first female press agents in the United States and had performed as an actress alongside Minnie Maddern Fiske, Joe Haworth, and Sydney Armstrong.
Shields made her earliest stage appearances as a child, performing in vaudeville with her mother and four siblings — Benn, Bernice, Santos, and Sarah — through the Baldwin-Melville Company of New Orleans. When she grew too tall to continue playing children's roles such as Little Lord Fauntleroy and Little Eva, she was replaced by a younger sister and left the stage. She then worked as a reporter for the New Orleans World, covering crime, politics, and fires, while also writing a daily fairytale column and a Sunday gossip column titled "I Know a Girl." She additionally served as a theater critic, reviewing plays and vaudeville productions appearing in New Orleans.
During her time at Hollins College, Shields acted in dramatic productions and wrote one-act plays for the school's dramatic society. She later sent those plays to a New York agent, and several were subsequently used in vaudeville. Her return to performing came when she traveled to New York to sell vaudeville material she had written. By 1910 she was touring vaudeville with her own company alongside actor and writer Allen G. Miller, whom she married at some point during that period. In 1913, Cecil B. DeMille cast her in a starring role in Reckless Age shortly before he transitioned to film work.
Shields made her Broadway debut in 1915 in What Money Can't Buy, which closed after eight performances. Over the following seasons she appeared in The Fear Market (1916), If (1917), The Case of Lady Camber (1917), and Parlor, Bedroom and Bath (1917–18). In December 1918 she joined the Over-There Theatre League, which became the first company of American actors to tour postwar Europe. Early in her career she also appeared in at least two silent films before concentrating her work on the stage.
Following the war, Shields appeared in additional Broadway productions between 1922 and 1934, including Spring Freshet, White Flame, Red Dust, Such Is Life, and New York Exchange. During that same period she served as Walker Whiteside's leading lady for seven seasons in road productions that toured nationally. Her second husband was actor Edward H. Robins, whose performing career began in 1900 and extended into the 1930s before he moved into directing and work with the Actors' Equity Association. The couple married sometime after 1920. Shields died on September 19, 1960, as a patient at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York.
