About
Sydney Rayner (September 12, 1895 – September 14, 1981) was an American operatic tenor born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He traveled to Milan in 1924 to pursue vocal training, and his studies there led to a professional debut in Rome in 1927, where he sang the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème. His career subsequently brought him to prominent European stages, including the Opéra-Comique and the Berlin Staatsoper.
Rayner made his Metropolitan Opera debut on May 23, 1936, taking the role of Don José in Carmen opposite mezzo-soprano Bruna Castagna. His tenure with the company continued through 1938 and encompassed a range of leading roles. He appeared in Aïda alongside Elisabeth Rethberg, and in Cavalleria rusticana and a second run of Carmen, both opposite Rosa Ponselle. His Met credits also included Les contes d'Hoffmann, conducted by Maurice Abravanel and directed by Herbert Graf, as well as Faust and Pagliacci, the latter featuring Robert Weede in his own Met debut. Rayner additionally performed in Manon, first alongside Bidu Sayão in her Metropolitan Opera debut and later with Grace Moore.
In 1943, Rayner sang in La forza del destino opposite Herva Nelli at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. His Broadway appearances followed, spanning 1944 to 1947 and including productions of Il Trovatore, Street Scene, I Pagliacci, La Tosca, and La Bohème. Throughout his career he also recorded for the Decca and Sonabel labels.
Rayner died at the age of 86 in East Patchogue, New York, on September 14, 1981.
