About
Sydney Morton is an American actress, singer, and dancer born in 1985. Her connection to performance spans generations: her maternal grandfather appeared on Broadway in 1933 in Run, Little Chillun, an all-Black revue, and her paternal grandfather danced professionally during the Harlem Renaissance. Neither of her parents works in the entertainment industry, a fact Morton has noted in interviews.
Morton began dancing at age four and trained with the College-Conservatory of Music, the Cincinnati Ballet, and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra while attending Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, from which she graduated in 2004. She went on to earn a degree in musical theatre from the University of Michigan in 2008 and subsequently studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Upright Citizens Brigade.
Her Broadway career spans 2009 to 2016 and includes five productions: Memphis, Motown the Musical, Evita, American Psycho, and Flashdance the Musical. Morton was a member of the original Broadway cast of Memphis, where she worked as a swing covering eight tracks or roles, among them parts played by both white and Black performers. She discussed the demands of that role in Robert Simonson's Performance of the Century (2012), describing the swing's central challenge as maintaining consistency with other performances. She was also part of the original Broadway cast of Motown the Musical, the 2012 revival of Evita, and the original Broadway cast of American Psycho, in which she appeared opposite Jordan Dean. Her credit for Flashdance the Musical came through the US touring company, where she played the role of Alex.
Beyond Broadway, Morton played the title role in the 2017 Berkeley Repertory Theatre production of An Octoroon. In February and March 2020 she appeared opposite Billy Harrigan Tighe in the pre-Broadway tryout of The Secret of My Success at the Paramount Theatre, a production that was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
Her television work includes a recurring role in Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, a recurring part on NBC's Manifest, and an appearance opposite Octavia Spencer in Netflix's miniseries Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker. In 2021 she was cast as Meghan Markle opposite Jordan Dean in Lifetime's Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace, which began production in May 2021 and aired in the fall of that year. She was also cast in the 2023 comedy-drama film A Good Person.
As of 2021, Morton lived in Manhattan with her husband, actor Preston Boyd. The couple has one daughter.
