About
Sydney Ellen Lucas, born July 11, 2003, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American actress whose work spans musical theatre, film, and television. She relocated to New York City with her parents and two older brothers at the age of two. Her parents operate a software consulting company, and her brother Jake Lucas is also a professional actor; the two have appeared together in a Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup commercial and alongside Jennifer Aniston in the 2015 film She's Funny That Way. Lucas has studied acting with Diane Hardin and has received vocal training from Badiene Magaziner as well as from her mother, Karri Lucas, who holds a degree in vocal performance from DePauw University. In 2009, at age six, Lucas underwent heart surgery to address an atrial septal defect.
Lucas is best known for her portrayal of Small Alison Bechdel in the musical Fun Home, with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. In 2014, at age ten, she originated the role in the Off-Broadway production, becoming the youngest individual to win an Obie Award for the performance. She also received a Drama Desk Award nomination that year. When Fun Home transferred to Broadway in 2015, Lucas continued in the role, earning a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical at age eleven. She departed the Broadway company on October 4, 2015.
Beyond Fun Home, Lucas played Mary Lennox in a Manhattan Concert Productions staging of The Secret Garden on February 21 and 22, 2016, at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall. She also appeared as Malcolm's Daughter in Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012.
Her film credits include Girl Most Likely (2012) and The Skeleton Twins (2014), in both of which she portrayed the younger version of a character played by Kristen Wiig. On television, Lucas has had guest roles on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Royal Pains, Saturday Night Live, and Team Umizoomi, and she starred as Jeannie McCullough in the main cast of AMC's western drama series The Son.
