About
Suzanne Bertish is an English actress born on 7 August 1951 in London, England, whose stage career has spanned Broadway and major British theatrical institutions. She received her education at Woldingham School before going on to establish herself as a versatile performer across theatre, television, and film.
Bertish became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she built a substantial body of stage work. Among her most notable RSC credits was the company's celebrated marathon production of Charles Dickens's The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, a performance running approximately eight and a half hours in which she took on three separate roles. She reprised all three of those roles in the 1982 television adaptation of the complete production. Her television work with the BBC continued the following year when she appeared as Adriana in the BBC Television Shakespeare staging of The Comedy of Errors in 1983.
Bertish made her Broadway debut in 1981, and her New York stage career extended through 2014. Her Broadway credits include The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, in which she brought her RSC performance to American audiences, as well as starring in Salome and appearing in Wit and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Her work on Broadway earned her a Theatre World Award in 1983.
On British television, Bertish appeared in two series of Shine on Harvey Moon beginning in 1984, playing Freida Gottleib, an Austrian refugee who co-owns a house with her brother Erich while the Moon family rents lodgings there. In 1988 she took on the role of Arlene Rimmer, a female counterpart to the character Arnold Rimmer, in the Red Dwarf episode Parallel Universe. From 2005 to 2007 she held a recurring role as Eleni in the cable television series Rome. In 2009, she appeared in a production of Breakfast at Tiffany's at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London.
Her film work includes a role in the Harrison Ford picture Hanover Street and an appearance in the vampire film The Hunger.
